Before "citizen science" became a buzzword, we were leading the way in participatory science. eOceans grew out of real-world experience running projects like eShark, the Great Fiji Shark Count, eShark Thailand, eManta, the Global Marine Conservation Evaluation, and Shark Sanctuary Evaluations—spanning 38 countries, collecting 146,000 shark observations, and analyzing data from millions of observations, mostly from dive guides who know their sites like the backs of their hands.
These efforts, helped secure CITES protections for 100+ shark and ray species and to improve shark sanctuaries worldwide—affecting more than 19.2 million sq km of ocean.
Back then, it was all done manually—through online surveys, paper logbooks, and endless emails.
